Workbridge, Where abilities equal employment

Nishantha (Shan) Gunasekara arrived in New Zealand with a great attitude, a strong desire to work and seven years’ experience of office work, but the only job he could find was delivering pamphlets.

Then Shan had a meeting with Workbridge employment consultant Liz Williams.

“From the moment I met Shan, I knew he had that special something to bring to an organisation,” says Liz.

“I got in touch with Z retailer John Lambert of Western Gas Ltd that very day to explore possibilities.”

Shan met John, had a work trial and started working at the Z service station in Auckland’s Point Chevalier a few weeks later. He’s learning all aspects of the business, including working as a forecourt concierge, before progressing into an administration role.

Going the extra mile

Site leader Arvin Autajay says Shan was nervous on his first day but quickly gained confidence.

“Shan was really eager to learn new things – his determination impresses me day by day. I am amazed at what he can do,” says Arvin.

Customers have given Z great feedback on Shan’s enthusiasm and helpfulness.

Shan says he appreciates Liz’s support, which helped his job search to turn out positively.

“I have a good employer, a contract and a salary. I appreciate very much her keen interest, enthusiastic approach and good guidance,” he says.

“I always make every effort to give my full contribution by going the extra mile. I am proud to be a member of the Z family and particularly to work for Western Gas Ltd under John’s leadership.”
